Press notes describe the movieвЂ™s concept as вЂњSlackerвЂќ by way of вЂњThe Exterminating Angel,вЂќ but it feels more like the Farrelly brothersвЂ™ version of вЂњCastawayвЂќ on the couch for a video game generation. HeвЂ™s a prisoner of pixelated walls, the eight-bit audio droning on in the background with hypnotic specificity, and вЂњRelaxerвЂќ finds its groove as both slapstick and a masterful surrealist media satire.

Maybe the end of the world, too.Д«urge, whose lanky features and saucer-shaped eyes recall Buster Keaton, is a perfect vessel for AbbiвЂ™s outrageous conundrum. AbbiвЂ™s resources dwindle, which only strengthens his resolve, and his grip on reality - never too clear in the first place - becomes increasingly suspect.

The latest challenge, culled from an issue of PC World, finds Abbi fighting to reach a sacred level of вЂњPac ManвЂќ in the hopes of scoring a $100,000 cash prize, which he hopes to use to buy a boat (or maybe visit his incarcerated father AbbiвЂ™s life goals swing wildly as his world holds still). It turns out heвЂ™s enmeshed in one of the innumerable challenges that his brother sends his way, dangling the possibilities of superficial awards at the end of the tunnel. As AbbiвЂ™s brother barks orders to his focused sibling, вЂњRelaxerвЂќ sets the stage for its outrageous premise -В a living room showdown between a man and his television set, while outside the apocalypse is nigh. A timer goes off and Abbi chugs a gallon of milk it doesnвЂ™t go well. Abbi (Burge) already has his eyes glued to the screen in the movieвЂ™s opening minutes, blasting opera music as he frantically speeds through another game level, while his stern older brother (a typically intense David Dastmalchian) videotapes the whole thing.

In a movie filled with wrongness, watching him power through a bag of Doritos is somehow the uneasiest.Media scholar Neil Postman diagnosed the ills of entertainment media in his aptly titled 1985 tome вЂњAmusing Ourselves to Death вЂќ that diagnosis could serve as an alternate title to the plight of PotrykusвЂ™ stationary protagonist. His efforts, while rarely pleasant to watch, give this bizarre little squiffle of a film some real fascinating impact. Here, he appears to be taking his cues from somewhere in another dimension, sporting tics and obsessive patterns that donвЂ™t land anywhere on the standard Hollywood chart of afflictions. The Alchemist CookbookвЂ™s biggest weapon, however, proves to be Hickson, a talented actor who was downright terrific in the SIFF fave Gimmie the Loot. With an effects budget likely ranking in the single digits, PotrykusвЂ™s film beats the recent Blair Witch revamp in making the woods a place where a Terrible Thing could be lurking behind every twig, especially-and most impressively-during the daylight. The fact that itвЂ™s often genuinely scary helps, too. Any attempt at a plot description, though, neglects the small, absorbingly bizarre bits scattered through virtually every scene. The camera keeps uncomfortably close to the main character as he works on his slowly disclosed plan, while barely tolerating the occasional visits from a semi-concerned family member (the hilarious Amari Cheatom).
